Ask Us > Shelf-Life

We are currently working towards instituting the protocol at our ambulatory surgery centers. What is the shelf life of the intralipid when stored on a cart?

Brull SJ. Lipid emulsion for the treatment of local anesthetic toxicity: patient safety implications. Anesth Analg 2008; 106: 1337-9.

"Concern over cost in maintaining supply of “lipid rescue kits” in areas where regional anesthesia is practiced may be trivial in centers where intralipid is already used for parenteral nutrition. The drug may be returned to the hospital’s central pharmacy to be used for parenteral nutrition before the expiration date and new intralipid with a 1-year shelf life can be restocked in the kit."

I suppose the shelf life may vary with the brand.

I like their suggestion to avoid wasting the product.
