I have been given the task of introducing Intralipid into our ED. I have written a standard operating procedue based on recommendations of Resus council UK and info gained from this site. However I have been asked whether Intralipid can be safely administered in those that are known to have allergies to Eggs or soya - do you have the answer to this ?
Damn good question. I assume allergy to any of the constituents of the typical TPN-type lipid emulsion formulations would preclude its use. However, there've been no reports of its use in such patients nor of any adverse effects to date following its use for resuscitation (a few dozen known reports). I don't think anyone knows for sure. Many thanks - have just heard from our local pharamcy that they do not want us to use in patients known to be allergic to these products but have asked me to put it before the clinical governance committee - afterall in the words of the pharmacist - if the patient is in cardiac arrest what have we got to lose in trying it - we can always treat the allergy!
