Ask Us > can lipofundin 20% be used instead of intralipid 20%

Most papers and case reports have only quoted the use of intralipid 20%. We don't have intralipid in our hospital but we do have lipofundin 20% and on comparing the contents, they are fairly similar. Was just wondering if Lipofundin 20% can be used instead of intralipid 20%
Thanks

Hi sorry for the delay in reply. I have two concerns about lipofundin. First, the MCTLCT combination may be theoretically less effective than the LCT alone (see Mazoit, Anesthesiology 2009). More important though is the question of whether lipofundin formulation you will use contains sodium oleate as I have read. This is problematic since the rapid infusion of a on-emulsified fatty acid could cause lung injury. check the contents for that.
